Information about CYPRUS Despite this beautiful Mediterranean island being split between Greek and Turkish interests, this does not impede the flow of tourism and commerce. Cypriots are extremely proud of their island and they take great pleasure in welcoming visitors. The Egyptians, Persians, Romans and Ottomans have all ruled over the island at various times, giving an idea of its rich history. Furthermore, many of its ruins can be visited in peace and tranquillity, and free of charge. It is one of the closest European countries to both Africa and the Middle East and the island has long been adept at profiting from this. It is for this reason that Cyprus is synonymous with shipping. Its economy is prosperous and it has good trade relations with mainland Europe, which are being strengthened as the island gears up for EU membership.
